The Singers Marry in Private Weekend Ceremony
The pop star and rocker take vows after a very brief engagement.
Singers Ashlee Simpson, 23, and Pete Wentz, 28, were married on Saturday, May 17, 2008 in a small, private ceremony at Simpson’s parent’s home in Encino, CA. The news of the wedding comes a mere month after the couple confirmed their engagement to the media amid pregnancy rumors.
Simpson/Wentz Wedding Details
According to People Magazine, the bride wore a Monique Lhuillier ivory lace dress and was preceded down the aisle by Wentz’s bulldog, Hemingway, who served as the ring bearer. Simpson’s dad, Joe Simpson, presided over the non-denominational vows while Simpson’s sister, Jessica, served as maid of honor. Approximately 150 close friends and family attended the nuptials including family friend Cacee Cobb and her beau, Donald Faison of Scrubs and new parents Nicole Richie and Joel Madden.
Amid break-up rumors, Jessica Simpson’s main squeeze, Tony Romo, did attend the wedding as the elder Simpson’s date and sources said they looked anything but broken up.
US Magazine reported the couple's request for guests to wear "dark cocktail attire." Simpson and Wentz had an Alice in Wonderland themed reception complete with a cake by Sam Godfrey. The cake was adorned with an edible top hat, stopwatch and tea pot. The guests were greeted with champagne, dancing and a sit-down dinner.
The rehearsal dinner was held at sister Jessica’s California home. Simpson and Wentz also had their respective bachelor/bachelorette parties. Wentz went out to dinner, had drinks and then partied at the Roosevelt Hotel with friends and his soon-to-be-father-in-law while Simpson had her party at luxury lingerie boutique Kiki De Montparnasse.
TMZ has reported People paid $1 million for the exclusive rights to wedding photos.
Was it a Shotgun Wedding?
Gossip blogs are being hounded with comments about Simpson and Wentz’s “shotgun wedding”. The now-married duo are caught up in rumors that Simpson is pregnant with the couple’s first child and that is the reason for the quickie engagement and marriage. The couple announced the engagement only a month ago.
Simpson was featured on the Today show April 18th to perform a single off her new album, Bittersweet World. Matt Lauer tried to get Simpson talking about wedding plans and baby rumors. When Lauer asked about a wedding date Simpson simply said they were enjoying being engaged and nothing had been planned. Almost exactly one month later the couple was married.
As for Lauer’s question about being with-child, Simpson decided to play coy and say that only time would tell but she had given birth…to her new record.
The Happy Couple
Wentz and Simpson started “officially” dating in 2006 after months of are-they-or-aren’t-they speculation. Wentz later told People magazine that he and Simpson were past the “honeymoon” period and it’s “crazy to be able to kiss your best friend.”
The duo have dodged engagement and pregnancy rumors throughout most of their public relationship. Simpson has been photographed holding bags over her stomach in public (a classic celebrity move) and wearing rings on her wedding-ring finger, all to no avail.
This is the first marriage for both singers. Only time will tell on the baby rumors.
