Maggie and Peter make it official and beat the "celebrity long engagement" curse.

Actors Peter Sarsgaard, 38, and Maggie Gyllenhaal, 31, finally made it official and were wed in a small, romantic ceremony in Italy. On Saturday, May 2nd, the couple of seven years tied the knot in front of a small number of family and friends including Gyllenhaal’s brother and his girlfriend, Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon.

Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard were married in a small chapel at Luxury Resort Masseria in Bindisi, Italy; a small, coastal town 350 miles southeast of Rome.

The private couple stayed true to form with their weekend nuptials being hush-hush. The couple maintains a rather quiet life in Brooklyn and their wedding was no different. After more than three years of engagement, there were no rumors the couple had even been planning their wedding.

According to People magazine, Gyllenhaal had a bridal shower in March that went unnoticed by the media. Reports and details have slowly been leaking out but not much is known besides the fact that it happened in Italy.

Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard have been a couple since 2002 and starred together in the 2003 low-budget film In God’s Hands. Four years into dating they announced their engagement and impending parenthood. Daughter Ramona was born in October 2006.

Gyllenhaal has been in films such as Mona Lisa Smile, Stranger Than Fiction, World Trade Center, and Donnie Darko. But perhaps her most famous role was Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight, replacing Katie Holmes who had starred in the previous movie as Rachel Dawes.

Sarsgaard has starred in movies such as Jarhead which co-starred Gyhllenhaal’s brother Jake and Kinsey. Sarsgaard was also nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in Shattered Glass.

The Long Engagement Curse

Unlike other celebrities with long engagements, Sarsgaard and Gyllenhaal seemed to have dodged a bullet. Many a long engagement ends with the couple calling off the whole relationship. For example, Nicolette Sheridan was engaged to Michael Bolton in March of 2006. Two and a half years later in August of 2008, the couple called off the engagement and ended their relationship.

One celebrity couple that seems to be beating the odds so far is Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher. They been engaged since early 2004 but are, reportedly, still going strong. Baron Cohen and Fisher were supposed to get married in late 2008 but had to postpone the wedding due to Fisher not converting to Judaism in time for the event.

However, the couple has one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Olive and bustling film careers. Fisher recently starred in Confessions of a Shopaholic and Baron Cohen’s new movie Bruno hits theaters July 10, 2009.
