De Rossi promotes new workplace sitcom, Better Off Ted, and denies she is pregnant

“We’re both nervous,” Ellen DeGeneres said Monday, minutes before her wife, Portia de Rossi appeared as a guest on her popular daytime series. “And I don’t know why we agreed to it but we’re going to play The Newlywed Game.” Today, incidentally, was the seven-month-anniversary for the golden couple.

Better Off Ted

De Rossi, 36, appeared on the show to promote her new show, Better Off Ted. It’s a workplace comedy and De Rossi is Veronica, Ted (the title character played by Jay Harrington), an ambitious and insensitive boss at an amoral conglomerate called Veridian Dynamics. “I like having the liberty to play characters who don’t give a damn,” De Rossi says.

De Rossi strode onset in fitted jeans, a green blouse and towered over DeGeneres in gold Louboutins. DeGeneres, 50, promptly made de Rossi remove the shoes so she could show the audience once and for all who is taller. It was DeGeneres by a breath.

Ellen and Portia’s Wedding

The interview was awkward at first until DeGeneres showed a photo from their wedding and de Rossi murmured, “It was the happiest day of my life,” to which the audience cooed in approval. “She [Ellen] is considerate, kind, and wonderful and…neat.”

DeGeneres immediately pounced on the tabloid headlines proclaiming de Rossi is pregnant via IVF. “Are we having a baby?” she said coyly. “I should probably have told you,” de Rossi replied. She added, “No, we’re not. Not that I’m aware of.”

Proposition 8

De Rossi and DeGeneres are the most famous gay couple in America right now. Their wedding was featured in People. De Rossi told the L.A. Times recently that she cried when Proposition 8 was approved last November on election day – the same day that President Obama was elected. Prop. 8 eliminated the rights of same-sex couples to marry in California. Although the measure is being reviewed by the California Supreme Court, legal commentators say it’s unlikely it will be reversed.

"I just remember being so excited when Obama was elected, it was just such an amazing moment . . . I just remember going to bed thinking, 'Prop. 8?,” De Rossi told the Times. “And I woke up in the morning to the news that it passed. And I -- I was shocked and I was deeply saddened.

"I just really think that when people really understand that this is a human rights issue and that there are a percentage of people living in this country that don't have the same rights as everybody else, I think that people will be compelled to make sure that they live in a country where every single citizen has the same rights."

Better Off Ted premieres Wed. March 18 on ABC.
